The resistance genes of antibiotic producing bacteria are naturally present in many such microorganisms (example: aminoglycosides and aminoglycoside modifying enzymes).The transfer of genes from producers to non-producers is likely a rather old process; the more recent use of antibiotics in medicine has made it possible to select such transfers to pathogenic bacteria.
